Standing Sentinel
Oil on Canvas 24 x 18 Inches Sold
This painting placed in the 2nd 100 - 2006 Arts for the Parks Exhibition in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, sponsored by the National Parks Academy of the Arts, September 12 - 21, 2006.
I was inspired by this scene after a day of plein air painting, a small herd of elk were grazing in the sagebrush backlit by the setting sun. The elk on the right is said to be “standing sentinel” for the group as they feed. Should there be an intruder, the sentinel would
alert the others to the danger. Standing tall in the background above them, looms Grand Teton, another “sentinel” of sorts.
