While cruising on the Kanawha Canal, visitors enjoy a late afternoon boat ride through Richmond’s historic Shockoe Bottom, past the City Docks lined with former tobacco warehouses, including the site of the infamous Libby Prison, and out to the Great Ship Lock where sailing vessels were lowered or raised from the navigable waters of the James River over 130 years ago.

Visitors and Richmonders alike enjoy a casual stroll past interpretive exhibits along the canal walk before dining in either historic Shockoe Slip or Shockoe Bottom. The two-mile walk also provides a refreshing break from the hectic schedules of the corporate world.

As afternoon joggers outrun the canal boats, the mind drifts back to an era when ocean-going sailing vessels moored in great numbers along the City Docks unloading their precious cargoes into the adjacent warehouses.

“Cruising on the Canal” is the sixth limited edition print of a Richmond scene by the artist and was produced from an original oil painting. Each print in this edition has been made on acid-free paper using permanent inks. The edition size is comprised of 600 regular prints, signed and numbered by the artist and 10 artist proofs, signed, numbered and remarqued by the artist.
