I painted this plein air oil along a highway outside the fortress town of Montalcino. The views of the distant Tuscan hills and mountains were stunning. I positioned myself between two rows in a vineyard which led down to a shed with a red-tiled roof at the end and another vineyard on the next hill behind it. The sun had just come up, scattering through the row on the left, back-lighting the grape leaves while the morning mist was still settling in the valleys of the distant mountains. I really felt like I was in the heart of Tuscany. I must have looked like I belonged there, too, when an Italian truck driver stopped his rig in the middle of the road and brought his delivery order over to me and asked for directions... in Italian!
