Situated on the James River, Richmond has long been the center of commerce in the heart of central Virginia serving as both the center of government and as a transportation hub for the entire state. Its prominence in this role dates back to the days of the bateaux and sailing brigs when the James River itself was the commercial highway of yesteryear. With the construction of the Kanawha Canal system paralleling the river, water traffic extended in the mid-1800's from Hampton Roads to Buchanan, near present day I-81. Railroads soon eclipsed the canal as a modern mode of transportation, seen in the distance in this print. Modern travel in and around the capitol has been made complete with the construction of interstate highways and a burgeoning airport.
The Skyline of Richmond has been released as a limited edition print series of 900 signed and numbered standard prints and 75 signed, numbered and remarqued Artist Proofs produced from an original oil painting . It depicts a view of the Richmond skyline from the south side of the river from what is known as the Manchester Wall, the last granite column that once supported the Richmond & Petersburg Railroad as seen in the companion print, the historic Skyline of Richmond, circa 1858.
