The James River slips quietly under the Richmond & Petersburg Railroad bridge in the capital city of Richmond many years ago. The railroad tracks lead the viewer across the river and up Eighth Street through the heart of the downtown business district.
Standing prominently on the horizon, the State Capitol is joined by tall church steeples punctuating the skyline. Below it is the U.S. Customs House, now the center section of the Federal Courthouse on Main Street. The great Gallego Flour Mill, one of the largest in the world, rises up on the right and glows with nighttime commerce on the Great Turning Basin of the Kanawha Canal. Chimney smoke gently billows from the residences and warehouses in Shockoe Slip and Shockoe Bottom. To the left, Tredegar Iron Works and the Virginia State Armory are going full blast. On Gambles Hill above them, Pratts Castle stands eerily against a foreboding, nocturnal sky. The Skyline of Richmond, Circa 1858 has been released as a limited edition print series of 950 signed and numbered standard prints and 75 signed, numbered and remarqued Artist Proofs produced from an original oil painting depicting a unique view of the quaint Richmond skyline from years long lost. It shares the identical viewpoint as its companion print, the modern day Skyline of Richmond. |
