This larger studio painting was done from a small plein-air study I painted on-site. It’s 8 miles from where I stood to the base of Mount Moran (10-1/2 to the peak). It's a breathtaking view in person. Lots of sagebrush and Willow Trees. When I painted the small study for this oil, there was a steady, pounding wind coming across the flats and up the 30-40 foot bank on which I had positioned myself. The wind, the settlers called it "gros ventre" (or great wind), was bouncing my canvas panel like turbulence on an airplane so hard I had to hold it still with my left hand while painting with my right. This studio canvas was a lot easier to execute in the calm of my studio. To see the study and read more details, click on "Willow Flats Study".
