| This next group of paintings are "plein air" paintings done on-site in Italy. The first week, I was in Vernazza on the Italian Riviera in the Cinque Terre region: five fishing villages connected by hiking trails and trains. It was spectacular. There were three calm days on the sea and three days of wind and high surf, providing a variety of great material for an artist.
The second week, I rented a car and made a big loop through Tuscany staying in a different walled-fortress hill town each night: Lucca, Volterra, Montalcino, Pienza, Cortona and ending up in Florence. All that driving cut into my painting time, but I returned to the studio with 1600 digital reference photos to keep me busy for quite some time. | When staying in the fortress hill town of Volterra in Tuscany, I had a delicious dinner and a lively conversation with one of the owners at the ristorante "La Vecchia Lira" at Via Matteotti 19, right in the heart of the historic city. If you ever visit Volterra, I recommend it highly. The prices are reasonable and the food is delizioso.Tell "Massimo" that I sent you, he'll appreciate it. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
| Below is an oil painting I completed of a Tuscan scene looking back from Montepulciano towards the hill town of Pienza. It was a commissioned piece based on the client's own photo emailed to me from clear across the country in California. What's particularly fascinating to me is that far in the distance (4-5 miles away) in his photo, just below Pienza I can see the exact spot where I myself stood and painted "Misty Mountain Vineyard" (far right, two rows above), thanks to the amazing high-resolution of the client's digital image! My memory of the countryside, vineyards, dirt roads and farmhouses are exactly as they were in his photo! | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
